A useful camp-kitchen box is one you can open and use without unloading everything onto the grass. Build it around the order of a meal: preparation, cooking, serving and washing-up.

Sort by the task
Keep preparation tools together, put eating utensils with bowls or plates, and make washing-up supplies easy to reach after dinner. Use small removable containers or pouches only where they reduce searching; too many layers can make a simple kit harder to use.
Pack the first-arrival meal and its equipment where they can be reached quickly. If you arrive late, being able to find the pan, spoon and food without emptying the car is more useful than a perfectly symmetrical box.
Measure boxes from the outside

Nest pans only as their instructions allow, using suitable protection between coated surfaces. Keep pointed utensils from scraping the inside of a pot. Secure detachable handles so they are easy to find when the pan is hot.
Store food in its appropriate packaging or food-safe containers and maintain any required chilling. Put cleaning chemicals in secure, clearly identified containers away from food. Store fuel according to its specific instructions rather than treating the kitchen box as a convenient place for every cartridge.
Make the return journey part of the plan
Bring a separate arrangement for dirty dishes and damp cloths when you cannot finish washing before departure. Unpack, clean and dry them promptly at home. Sealing a wet sponge inside a box of clean equipment creates work for the next trip.
Keep a short inventory inside the lid and mark consumables that need replacing. After a few trips, remove things that never leave the box unless they serve a necessary backup role.
Test the packed kit with a complete meal before adding another storage unit. The aim is easy access and reliable cleaning, not the highest number of compartments.
