Know where the protection ends

Think about how trousers overlap the cuff and how rain may run down your clothing. A taller model changes the opening height, but fit and the manufacturer’s intended use still matter.
Allow for a thicker construction
Try waterproof socks inside the actual shoes or boots you plan to use. Their layered construction may occupy more room than your normal walking socks. Check toe space and pressure rather than forcing a thick sock into tight footwear.

If a sock repeatedly wets in one place under normal use, inspect it and contact the manufacturer. Note the conditions and whether water could have entered at the cuff. Do not stretch, puncture or modify the membrane to investigate.
Keep a drying plan
Waterproof socks need cleaning and complete drying just like other camping clothing, though their construction requires appropriate care. Use them as one part of the system
Choose suitable footwear and clothing for the route, and carry a dry spare pair for camp. Waterproof socks can add a useful option, but they do not make damaged footwear, unsafe crossings or an unsuitable fit acceptable. Test them on a shorter outing before relying on them for several wet days.
