A water carrier is only convenient if you can clean its inside, tap and cap after the trip. Before filling it again, inspect it in good light and read the manufacturer’s care directions. A narrow opening or folding bladder can need a different approach from a rigid wide-mouth bottle.

Empty and inspect every accessible part
Remove leftover water and check the container for residue, visible growth, cracks or damage around the outlet. Take apart the tap or cap only to the extent allowed by the instructions. Keep small seals together so they return to the correct position.
If an inaccessible area remains contaminated, ask the manufacturer about replacement components or a new container. Do not assume that removing a smell proves the whole carrier is suitable for drinking water again.
Use the approved washing method

It specifically warns against boiling water in these products. That advice should not be replaced with a kettle-full of boiling water simply because heat seems like a stronger clean.

Keep cleaning and disinfecting instructions separate
If the manufacturer recommends a disinfectant treatment, use the specified compatible product, concentration, contact time and rinsing procedure. Household products vary in strength. Do not invent a universal bleach dose or mix cleaning chemicals.
Rinse through the outlet where the directions require it, rather than cleaning only the main body. Keep brushes and washing equipment clean and reserved for appropriate uses. Check that a brush can reach the corners without damaging a flexible lining.
Dry before storage
Arrange the container as its maker recommends so water drains and air can circulate. A cap screwed onto a still-damp carrier can trap the very moisture you intended to remove. Store it away from dirt, fuel and cleaning chemicals once fully dry.
