A bike-camping packing list has to fit both your overnight needs and the luggage system on your bicycle. Start with shelter, sleep equipment, food, water and riding essentials. Add comfort items only after you have checked that the loaded bicycle remains within all its limits and rides predictably.

Plan the overnight stop first
Confirm where you will camp, how you can access it by bicycle and which facilities are available. Drinking water, food nearby and a place to secure the bicycle can change the equipment you need. Keep the first loaded trip modest enough that you can adjust the arrangement without pressure to cover a long distance.
Cycling UK’s cycle-camping guide provides a useful overview of the main equipment groups. Build your own list around the season, route and booked accommodation rather than copying another rider’s smallest possible setup.
Pack by function
- Shelter: tent, complete pitching parts and an appropriate repair provision.
- Sleep: sleeping bag or quilt, insulated mat and dry sleep clothing.
- Food and water: containers and a meal plan, with cooking equipment only where needed and permitted.
- Riding: suitable clothing, lights, navigation, lock and repair equipment you know how to use.
- Personal kit: medication, wash items, sun or rain protection and phone power.
Do not count a head torch as a substitute for the bicycle lighting required for your journey. Likewise, camping repair tape is not a replacement for the tools and spares your bicycle needs.
Fit the luggage to the bicycle
Follow the load limits and mounting instructions for the bicycle, racks and bags. Check clearance around tyres, brakes, cables, pedals and steering through their full movement. Nothing should dangle where it can enter a wheel or drivetrain.
Heavy items need a secure location consistent with the luggage manufacturer’s guidance. Check balance and stability after loading, and test the bike on a short local ride before the trip. If something moves or rubs, fix the arrangement before continuing.
Separate dry sleeping kit
Keep the sleeping bag and dry clothing away from wet tent fabric. An internal dry bag can help organise luggage that does not itself provide dependable weather protection.
The Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag 20 L on Amazon UK is a storage option to size against your actual kit. Do not assume any dry bag is suitable for exposed mounting on a bicycle; check its intended use and use a compatible, properly secured luggage system.
Keep stops simple
Store snacks, waterproofs and the repair items you may need during the day where you can reach them without unpacking the tent. Leave space for food bought along the route. At camp, keep the next morning’s riding items together so packing up does not become a search through every bag.
If you have space for a seat, compare camping stools and chairs to decide whether you need a quick perch or support for a longer evening.
