Camping string lights work best when they provide gentle light where people sit and move. A long decorative strand is less useful if most of its length ends up behind the kitchen box or the power lead cannot reach a suitable supply position.

Measure the illuminated area
Separate the lit length from the unlit supply cable. A product described as a seven-metre system might include several metres of cable before the first LED. Sketch the route around the living area and identify where the switch and power source will sit.
Use existing attachment points only within their intended load limits. Do not puncture tent fabric or strain lightweight loops with heavy lamps. Keep the route away from exits, hot cooking equipment and areas where children or pets could catch a dangling lead.
Choose gentle, adjustable light
A dimmer lets you use a brighter setting for setting up and a softer level while sitting. Think about the direction of the LEDs and whether you can shield them from neighbouring pitches. More lumens are not always more comfortable at close range.

Match the power arrangement
Compare battery-operated, rechargeable, USB-powered and mains-powered systems separately. A USB strip may need an external bank throughout use rather than having a built-in battery. A mains kit requires an appropriate camping electrical setup.

Budget an evening’s energy

Check whether a power bank remains on with a very small lighting load. Test the complete setup for longer than a few minutes, especially on the lowest brightness, so automatic shut-off does not surprise you after dark.
Check weather use and packing
Read the permitted environment for the complete system, including the switch, battery compartment and connectors. An outdoor-looking cable or silicone covering does not establish that every component can sit in rain.
Keep a separate headlamp for walking away from the tent. At pack-down, switch the lights off, let damp parts dry as instructed and coil the cable without sharp bends. Store attachment clips with the lights so the next setup remains quick and tidy.
