Synthetic insulation does not make every sleeping bag safe for the same wash cycle. A lightweight mummy bag, a bulky cotton-lined rectangular bag and a model with detachable accessories can have different care requirements. Read the label on the bag you own before choosing a cleaner or programme.

Inspect and prepare the bag
Look for loose stitching, damaged zips and tears in the shell. Empty pockets and follow instructions for removable pillows, hoods or other parts. Repair damage appropriately before washing if movement in the machine could make it worse.
Check machine capacity as well as whether machine washing is allowed. The bag needs enough room for effective washing and rinsing. If it fills the drum tightly before water is added, obtain advice about a suitable larger machine or professional service rather than forcing it in.
Choose a compatible technical cleaner
Nikwax Tech Wash is described by its manufacturer as a cleaner for outdoor gear and synthetic sleeping bags. Check compatibility with your particular bag, then compare the cleaning product through Nikwax’s Amazon UK store. A waterproofing product sold alongside it is a different treatment.
Use the specified dose and remove old detergent or softener residue from the machine as directed. Avoid adding fabric conditioner for a softer feel: Rab’s synthetic-bag care guidance advises against it because it can coat the insulation.
Let the label determine the programme
Select the stated temperature and gentle programme, with any required extra rinse. Do not transfer a temperature from another bag merely because both have polyester filling. The lining, shell, coatings and construction also influence suitable care.
Support the wet bag when removing it and avoid twisting or wringing it forcefully. Keep it away from a dirty floor while transferring it to the drying arrangement. This is easier when you prepare the space before the wash begins.
Dry fully before storing
Use a dryer only if permitted and follow the specified setting. If air drying is required, allow ample space and circulation, turning and supporting the bag as directed. Do not drape it over a heater or use high heat to meet a departure deadline.
Check thick areas, seams and any detachable sections for remaining dampness. Once dry, inspect the bag and store it in the maker’s recommended arrangement. A liner and sensible airing can help with routine cleanliness, but they do not remove the need to clean the bag when its condition calls for it.
