Choosing a left or right sleeping bag zip sounds like a small detail until the opening faces the tent wall. Your preferred hand is part of the decision, but the position of the tent door, your partner and the surrounding bedding can matter more. Set up the sleeping space before choosing a side.

Confirm how the manufacturer labels the side
Look at the manufacturer’s diagram or ask the retailer to explain its orientation. A photograph taken from above can be confusing when you imagine yourself inside the bag. Do not assume that an image of a left-zip model also represents the right-zip option currently selected in the listing.
Write the required side beside the exact size and model name. This is especially useful when a retailer groups several lengths and zip options on one page. Recheck the basket description before paying; changing a size can sometimes change the available zip variant too.
Choose around the tent entrance
Lay out the mats in the position you expect to use. Where will you sit up, put on shoes and leave the bedroom? Try a bag opening on that side first. In a tent with two doors, each person may prefer an outward-facing opening. In a shared bedroom with one main entrance, the most convenient arrangement may be different.
Also consider whether a wall slopes close to the zip. Reaching into a narrow gap can be awkward, particularly when clothing or a liner gets caught. Leave enough space to operate the slider without continually pushing bedding against the inner tent.
Try it with your usual sleeping position
Zip the bag, turn onto your normal side and find the pull with your eyes closed. Check whether the slider, baffle or fastening presses uncomfortably against you. Try sitting up and getting out rather than judging solely from a few seconds lying still.
A two-way zip can offer extra ventilation, but check which end opens and how far. A short side zip and a full-length zip provide different access. The words “left zip” tell you the side, not the complete opening arrangement.
Joining two bags needs more than opposite sides
Outwell lists right and left variants for the Camper Lux and describes a joining option. The Camper Lux single listing is a starting point, but confirm the selected zip and the matching partner bag before buying a pair.
Opposite-sided bags from unrelated ranges are not automatically compatible. Obtain confirmation for the exact models and generations. If joining is irrelevant to your trips, choose the side that makes entry, ventilation and night-time exits easiest in your own tent.
