A sleeping bag liner can make bedding more pleasant and add insulation, but it is a poor substitute for choosing a suitable bag and mat in the first place. Treat an advertised warmth increase as a conditional claim about the product, rather than a number you can automatically subtract from your sleeping bag’s comfort rating.

Why simple temperature arithmetic is misleading
Imagine a bag with a comfort rating of 5°C and a liner advertised to add “up to 4°C”. It does not follow that you now have a verified 1°C comfort-rated system. That calculation assumes the advertised maximum applies to your body, bag, mat and conditions together.
Sea to Summit’s explanation of liner warmth discusses the effect of the surrounding sleep system, including heat loss through the mat. Read the qualifications attached to a warmth claim, especially where a retailer removes the words “up to” from a product title.
Check what is making you uncomfortable
Before shopping, identify the problem. Are you cold underneath, noticing air around your shoulders, or simply disliking the feel of the bag’s lining? Check that the bag is dry, its zip and collar are adjusted properly, and the mat is appropriate for the expected conditions. A liner addresses some needs more directly than others.
For example, an extra inner sheet may improve the feel of bedding while leaving an uninsulated air bed underneath unchanged. Buying the liner first can use up the money needed for the more relevant improvement. Avoid testing the limits of inadequate equipment on a remote or exposed trip.
A current thermal liner example
The current Sea to Summit Reactor Lightweight is advertised with an increase of up to 4°C. Its stretch fabric and armholes are also worth considering for everyday usability. The Regular version on Amazon UK is a specific model to compare; other Reactor generations and weights have different descriptions.
Try the liner inside your actual bag
Get in wearing your normal sleep clothing, turn onto both sides and bend your knees. Check that the liner does not twist uncomfortably or pull across your feet. Practise finding the opening in the dark. A liner that looks roomy by itself can feel different inside a tapered bag.
Also check washing instructions and how you will dry it between trips. Its usefulness may come as much from keeping the sleeping bag cleaner as from warmth. Buy it for a clear purpose, and keep the original bag rating as your conservative planning reference unless the complete combination has reliable, applicable test data.
