Silnylon and silpoly describe nylon and polyester tent fabrics treated with silicone, but the names do not reveal the complete construction. Check the coating on each side, the fabric weight and the seam treatment before choosing a tent or a repair product.

Separate the fibre from the coating
The base fibre affects characteristics such as moisture uptake and stretch. The coating contributes waterproofness and changes how adhesives and seam treatments work. Some fabrics combine silicone on one side with a different coating on the other.
SlingFin’s coating guide explains these combinations. A shorthand label in a shop title is less useful than a manufacturer specification that identifies both fabric faces.
Understand wet-weather tension
Nylon generally absorbs more moisture and changes dimension more than polyester. In a tent, that can mean a flysheet needs its tension checked after becoming wet. Polyester’s lower moisture uptake can help it retain the initial pitch.
SlingFin’s fabric comparison also explains that nylon’s stretch can distribute loads. The useful conclusion is not that one fibre always wins: fabric specification, reinforcement and shelter geometry remain important.
Compare actual shelters
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Fabric weight and denier | A finer material may involve different durability trade-offs |
| Coatings on both sides | Determines relevant care and repair compatibility |
| Seam treatment | Shows whether additional sealing is required |
| Pole and guyline layout | Affects the complete structure under load |
| Carry package | Includes the accessories needed for the intended pitch |
Do not use a hydrostatic-head number alone to rank storm suitability. It describes fabric water-pressure resistance, not the strength of the whole tent or a permitted wind speed.
Buy the compatible repair
Gear Aid Seam Grip SIL is intended for silicone-treated fabric. Compare the SIL sealant on Amazon UK only after confirming it is appropriate for the surface you will repair.
Ordinary repair tape or a polyurethane seam sealer may not bond to a silicone surface. Check the instructions, clean and dry the area as directed and allow the specified cure time. Ask the tent maker if the coating is unclear.
Choose around your priorities
If stable wet-weather tension matters to you, compare a suitable polyester design. If a nylon tent offers the space, weight and structure you need, plan to monitor and adjust its pitch as instructed. Keep either shelter dry in storage and use compatible repairs. The better purchase is the complete tent that suits your route and care routine.
