What two air layers offer
Comfort Plus allows different pressures in the upper and lower layers. That gives you another way to adjust the feel under your body. If one layer loses air, the other can remain inflated, but the mat no longer has its complete normal performance.
Do not treat that redundancy as permission to skip repairs or continue into conditions that need the full sleeping system. Carry the appropriate repair equipment and inspect an older mat carefully before relying on it.
What additional thickness changes
Ether Light XR’s deeper surface may appeal if you want more clearance for hips and shoulders. Comfort still depends on body position and inflation pressure. Lie on the mat and adjust it before deciding; a thickness measurement alone cannot tell you whether it feels supportive.
The XR’s current construction and valve also differ from the older XT. Check that the product name actually includes XR when using these specifications. XR Pro is another model with different insulation and weight.
