Low-Wattage Camping Kettles: Choose by Amps and Mug Size

A low-wattage kettle can make hot drinks easier to fit into a campsite’s limited mains supply. Choose it by the power it draws and the amount of water you actually need, rather than by the word “travel” on the box.

Read the wattage first

A 1,000W kettle draws approximately 4.35A at 230V. This is a straightforward resistive-load calculation: 1,000 divided by 230. It still takes a substantial share of a modest pitch supply, so count the appliances running alongside it.

For example, adding a 750W heater makes 1,750W before lights or a fridge. A smaller kettle does not necessarily use fewer watts: capacity and electrical input are separate specifications.

Compare capacity with your mugs

The Kampa Tempest 1.7L Fog kettle listing specifies 1,000W. It offers more nominal capacity than a one-litre model, which may suit a group, but check the minimum and maximum fill marks before use.

Measure the mugs you normally fill. Two 350ml mugs need 700ml before any extra water for another use. A kettle marketed by “cups” may be describing smaller servings than yours. Never exceed its maximum fill to avoid making a second batch.

Expect a different boiling routine

Lower input power generally means waiting longer to heat the same water under comparable conditions. Actual time depends on the starting temperature, quantity and kettle design, so avoid treating a seller’s fastest boil claim as a guarantee for a full kettle at camp.

Heat the amount required while respecting the minimum fill. Prepare mugs and breakfast while it works, and stagger other high-power appliances. This is often easier than trying to run everything at once on a restricted supply.

Check what cordless means

A cordless kettle normally lifts off a mains-powered base; it does not imply an internal rechargeable battery. Confirm the plug, voltage and instructions for the UK version. A 12V travel kettle is a different electrical product and needs a compatible supply.

The Camping and Caravanning Club’s electricity guide recommends planning around the limited pitch supply and avoiding simultaneous kettle and heater use. Check the kettle’s permitted environment too: being sold for caravan use does not make it suitable for rain or an exposed outdoor table.

Plan the hot-water position

Use a stable surface approved for the appliance, with the lead positioned to avoid pulling and spills. Keep the base and connection dry and follow the supplied instructions. Let the kettle cool and empty it appropriately before packing.

For hook-up camping, a correctly sized low-wattage kettle can be convenient. For a battery power station, check both its continuous output and the energy each boil consumes; a 1,000W kettle will not suit every portable battery.
