A gravity water filter can be useful when several campers need treated water at the same stop. Instead of repeatedly squeezing a small bottle, you suspend an untreated-water reservoir above the outlet and let gravity move water through the filter.

Choose by the amount you need at camp
List the water needed for the next meal and refill period. A larger reservoir can simplify group use, but it adds bulk and needs a suitable support. For one person taking frequent small drinks while moving, a smaller filter may be easier to handle.
Check whether the kit includes a clean reservoir or only a collection bag. A complete two-bag system gives you somewhere to store filtered water, but the bags must remain clearly assigned to their separate jobs.
Inspect a complete system
The Platypus GravityWorks 4L includes separate four-litre clean and dirty reservoirs, a microfilter and connecting hoses. Compare the four-litre GravityWorks kit on Amazon UK; replacement-bag and cartridge listings are not the complete system.
Platypus specifies a microfilter life of up to 1,500 litres depending on water quality. Check manufacturer units carefully because retailer descriptions can confuse litres and gallons. A maximum service-life claim does not replace care or damage checks.
Keep the treatment limits clear
The GravityWorks microfilter specification lists bacteria and protozoa treatment, but not viruses or chemicals and toxins. Gravity describes how water moves; it does not make a filter a universal purifier.
Choose a reliable source and a treatment plan appropriate to its hazards. Do not use suspected chemically contaminated water on the assumption that a filter bag will make it safe. Arrange an appropriate backup for the trip.
Set up a clean working flow
Follow the hose connections, flow direction and reservoir positioning in the manual. Use a support suitable for the filled bag and keep the clean outlet, caps and receiving container away from untreated water and muddy ground.
Open the clamp as instructed and check the connections for leakage. Do not bypass the filter to improve speed. If flow falls, use the manufacturer’s backflushing procedure with suitable treated water rather than applying excessive pressure.
Care for the filter between uses
Protect a used hollow-fibre filter from freezing and follow the model’s integrity-check instructions after suspected damage. Platypus provides specific guidance for its system; do not transfer an improvised test from another brand.
Practise setup and cleaning at home, then pack all required hoses and caps together. A gravity system earns its place when it supplies the group’s required volume through a clear, repeatable process that keeps untreated and treated water apart.
