A campsite daypack has a different job from the rucksack that carries your tent. It needs to hold the things you take away from your pitch: lunch, drinking water, waterproofs and the extra layer you will want when you stop. Choose its size around that actual load, including anything you carry for somebody else.

Lay out one realistic day’s kit
Start with the longest outing you expect to make from camp. A stroll to the village and a full day on exposed paths do not create the same packing problem. Put the required kit on a table, including navigation, charged phone, relevant first-aid supplies and any personal essentials. Add your food and filled water bottles before judging how much space remains.
A compact summer jacket can disappear into a side pocket; a bulky fleece may occupy most of a small bag. This is why litre recommendations are only starting points. Your own equipment gives a much better answer than somebody else’s minimalist packing photograph.
Use size bands to narrow the search

These are practical shopping ranges, not route-safety rules. Keep essential equipment even if that means choosing a larger bag. Avoid buying extra volume merely to fill it with things you will not use.
Separate capacity from carrying comfort
Try the bag with the load it will actually carry. Walk, bend to tie a shoe and reach for a bottle. A bag that looks neat in the mirror may swing away from your back or place a zip where it rubs your neck. Check that the harness adjustment suits your body and that the pockets remain accessible when the main compartment is full.

Will you carry it inside another rucksack?
If you arrive by car, a structured daypack can travel ready packed. If you backpack to the campsite, consider using your main rucksack partly empty, provided its compression and harness still work comfortably. Taking a second pack adds weight and another object to organise.
A folding bag can suit a brief shopping trip, but assess it just as carefully for a longer walk. Thin shoulder straps and a shapeless back panel can become irritating once drinks and groceries go inside. Make the final decision with your kit packed and your route in mind; the smallest bag that looks tidy is not automatically the most useful one.
