A six-person camping tent can be a sensible family base, but the number on the bag does not tell you how comfortable a week inside it will feel. Start with your actual beds and the space you need on a wet afternoon, then compare tents that accommodate both.

Draw the sleeping arrangement first
Measure every mattress at its widest point. Add the widths for each proposed bedroom and compare them with the inner floor plan. Leave room to use the doorway without climbing across another sleeper. A divider can provide privacy while also restricting where a wide double bed fits.

Check the practical ownership costs
Include the pump if choosing an air tent, suitable pegs, a matching footprint if wanted and the space needed to dry everything at home. Test whether you can lift the packed tent into the vehicle and carry it from parking to the pitch.
Ask how many people the instructions expect for pitching and try a complete practice setup before travelling. Confirm the campsite pitch can accommodate the tent, extended guylines and the required spacing. Choose the six-person tent whose layout works with your family’s equipment and routine, rather than assuming every six-berth design offers the same holiday space.
