When rain stops beading and the outside of a waterproof jacket turns dark and saturated, the face fabric may be wetting out. That does not automatically mean the waterproof membrane has failed, although the jacket can feel noticeably less comfortable.

Separate the surface from the barrier
The outer water-repellent treatment helps water bead and roll away. The waterproof barrier beneath it performs a different job. Rab’s reproofing guidance explains that a wet-looking exterior can occur while the garment remains waterproof, with breathability and comfort affected.
Look at where and when the dampness appears. General clamminess after hard activity, water entering at a cuff and a persistent wet patch beneath damaged seam tape are different observations. They should not all lead to the same diagnosis.
Inspect before treating
Check the fabric for tears, the seams for lifting tape and the zip or storm flap for obvious damage. Empty the pockets and inspect areas hidden beneath pack straps. If there is structural damage or delamination, contact the manufacturer or a repair specialist.
Take a few photographs and note the conditions in which the problem occurs. This helps when asking for repair advice and gives you a useful comparison after cleaning.
Clean according to the garment label
Dirt, sweat and residue can affect performance. Follow the jacket’s specific care instructions for preparation, cleaner, wash cycle and drying. Rab’s waterproof-care guide sets out its recommended process, but another manufacturer or fabric may need different treatment.
Nikwax Tech Wash is a technical cleaning product to consider where compatible. You can find the range through the Nikwax Amazon UK store. Check that you select a cleaner rather than assuming every bottle in the range does the same job.
Restore repellency only as directed
Some care procedures use controlled heat to reactivate the existing finish; others call for a compatible reproofing treatment. Use heat only when the garment label permits it, and follow the product’s instructions. Do not improvise a hot dryer setting or iron temperature.
A reproofing product cannot mend a hole or reattach failed seam tape. If cleaning and approved care do not address the problem, return to diagnosis rather than adding repeated coatings.
Check before the next trip
Let the jacket dry fully and inspect it again. Assess surface beading with an appropriate gentle check, then use it in manageable conditions before relying on it for a demanding trip. Regular care and prompt repairs can preserve a useful shell without replacing it solely because the outer fabric looked wet.
Use our hydrostatic-head explanation to distinguish fabric waterproofness from surface beading. Our breathability guide covers ventilation and layers when sweat is part of the problem.
