The PocketRocket 2 is the simpler, lighter bare burner. The Deluxe adds a pressure regulator, integrated ignition and a different burner head. Choose between them according to how you cook rather than assuming the Deluxe is the only model that can simmer.

Compare the same measurement basis
| Published feature | PocketRocket 2 | PocketRocket Deluxe |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum stove weight | 73g | 83g |
| Published packaged weight | 105g | 97g |
| Integrated piezo ignition | No | Yes |
| Flame adjustment | Adjustable, including simmering | Adjustable, including simmering |
| Pressure regulator | No | Yes |
These figures come from the PocketRocket 2 and Deluxe manufacturer pages. The bare Deluxe is 10g heavier, while the listed packaged figures go the other way. Do not mix a bare-stove figure with a packaged one; compare what you will actually carry.
Decide whether the features help your meals
The regulator is intended to improve consistency as fuel conditions change. It does not remove the need for approved fuel or make the stove suitable for every winter condition. Integrated ignition can be convenient, but check the lighting instructions and keep an appropriate backup method where recommended.
Both stoves offer flame control. The pan’s construction, food and wind still influence whether a sauce catches. A broad burner feature is not an independent guarantee that your particular frying pan will cook evenly.
Check the pot and wind rules
Use cookware within the chosen stove’s limits and inspect the complete unlit setup for stability. Include the canister, pot, lid and any required stabiliser when comparing the whole kitchen.
Neither stove should be surrounded by an improvised windscreen. Follow MSR’s exact operating guidance and cook outdoors with the required clearances. A wind-resistant burner component does not authorise enclosing the fuel canister.
Which should you investigate?
Compare the PocketRocket 2 if a simple adjustable burner meets your needs. Compare the PocketRocket Deluxe if regulation and integrated ignition justify the difference for you.
Check whether the listing is for the individual stove or a cookware kit. This is a specification-based comparison, not a field-test ranking. An existing stove that reliably handles your normal meals may not need replacing simply because a more elaborate version exists.
