Autumn camping asks more of a sleep system than simply changing the label from two seasons to three. Nights become longer, wet equipment may have less time to dry, and an apparently mild day can be followed by a much colder night. Choose the bag, mat and packing routine together.

Use the forecast as a starting point
Check overnight conditions for the destination shortly before departure, including any weather warnings. Then compare the sleeping bag’s comfort rating with your needs and experience. Do not use an extreme survival figure as a comfortable sleeping target, or assume the number in a model name describes comfort.
A bag that worked well on a sheltered September campsite is not automatically suitable for an exposed late-October trip. Keep the decision specific to the location and conditions. If your equipment does not suit the revised forecast, change the trip or arrange suitable equipment before leaving.
Look for coverage you can actually maintain
Check the hood, collar and zip baffle while lying in your normal sleeping position. Can you turn over without pulling the bag tight across your shoulders? Can you adjust the opening comfortably while keeping your face clear? A warmer specification is less useful if poor fit repeatedly leaves an unwanted gap.
At the other extreme, avoid unnecessary space that makes the bag awkward to manage. Use the manufacturer’s maximum user height and internal dimensions where available. Overall bag length includes features that may not translate directly into usable sleeping space.
A product name can hide an important distinction
The current Rab Ascent −6°C has a stated comfort rating of 0°C. The −6°C in its name refers to the limit rating. If you investigate the Ascent range on Amazon UK, check the selected size and current specification rather than assuming that the name guarantees comfortable sleep at that temperature.
Protect the warmth you have bought
Keep bedding in a suitable dry storage arrangement during travel, separate from wet clothing and tent fabric. Think ahead about where you can air it during the trip. A car boot full of damp equipment is not a drying plan, and packing a wet bag away each morning deserves an explicit solution.
Check the mat’s insulation as carefully as the bag. Adding a blanket above you does not necessarily address cold underneath. Test the whole setup on an easy outing with a fallback before committing to a more demanding trip. Autumn comfort comes from several suitable pieces working together, supported by a realistic plan for keeping them dry and usable.
